Woman killed on Melbourne's Monash Freeway after helping driver

A woman who stopped to help a driver in a crash has died after being hit by another car on a Melbourne freeway.

Police said a car was travelling on Heatherton Road when it crashed into traffic lights before stopping on the Monash Freeway in Endeavour Hills about 3.15am.

The good Samaritan stopped to assist the 35-year-old driver when she was struck by a Ute on the Monash Freeway.

The 63-year-old woman from Langwarrin died at the scene.

The 35-year-old man from Noble Park was taken to The Alfred hospital with minor upper-body injuries.

Detectives investigating the crash confirmed the 28-year-old Ute driver stopped at the scene.

"The driver of the car that hit the woman stopped and is helping police with their enquiries," Victoria Police said in a statement.

The Monash Freeway is closed inbound between Heatherton Road and Stud Road due to the smash with delays quickly building.

Motorists have been advised to use the Princes Highway as an alternative and allow extra travel time.
