AN INSIGHT INTO MISSING PERSONS CASES IN AUSTRALIA:

* 305,268 missing persons reports between 2008 and 2015

* Average 38,159 reports a year

* 98% ultimately located, most alive

* 3330 not yet located

* 60% return or found within 48 hours

* 15-19% remain missing for up to a month or more

* Youths aged 13-17 most likely to go missing

* 9% are children aged 12 and under

* 53% male, 47% female

* Rate of reported missing persons increased from 147 per 100,000 people in 2008 to 168 in 2015
