Family members suspect the 79-year-old got up during the night and went for a walk.

They fear he may be confused as Mr Evans has dementia and is blind in one eye.

The search is now into its third day with more than a hundred volunteers scouring a nine-kilometre area, which includes dense terrain and old mining territory.

Family members told 9News Mr Evans' dog Millie, a kelpie, usually follows him everywhere but slept through the night.

The Victoria Police Airwing, Search and Rescue Squad, Dog Squad, Mounted Branch and local uniform members have also joined the search for the second day.

Mr Evans was last seen wearing a grey jumper and grey long pants.
