Miracle survival as men escape crumpled wreckage and fireball after Melbourne crash

Two men are extremely lucky to be alive after surviving a car crash in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s north this morning.

One of the men was trapped for 40 minutes and had to be freed from his crumpled Toyota Camry, while the other man managed to escape his car only moments before it burst into flames.

It’s believed the cars were travelling north on St Georges Road about 4.15am when one car changed lanes, clipping the back of the second car and pushing it several hundred metres along the road before it struck a power pole.

The driver of the car that changed lanes, a 30-year-old Mernda man, managed to flee before the car exploded.

The driver of the first car, a 33-year-old Epping man, was eventually freed after firefighters cut off the roof of his car.

Both men are at Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries.
