The Commonwealth is preparing to lobby states, territories and non-government entities to join a nation redress scheme for survivors of institutional child sex abuse.

Social Services Minister Christian Porter will meet separately with NGOs and attorneys-general in Melbourne on Friday, after pledging an initial $33.4 million in the federal budget to establish the Commonwealth scheme.

He will be seeking to ensure institutions such as churches and charities can participate in the scheme, irrespective of whether the jurisdiction in which they're located also joins.
