About 5500 military personnel will no longer pay income tax with the federal government extending its exemption for those serving in specified Middle East combat zones.

Full tax exemption has applied to those serving on Operation Highroad in Afghanistan and Operation Okra in Iraq.

But under the change, to apply from the next payday, the exemption will apply to Australian Defence Force personnel currently serving on Operations Manitou, Accordion, Okra (Zone B) and Augury in the Middle East.
