Jockey Michelle Payne taken to hospital after falling from horse during race in Mildura

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been taken to hospital after a fall while riding in Mildura today.

Payne, 30, was taken to Mildura Base Hospital for observation after being dislodged by her mount Dutch Courage in the seventh race of the day.

Racing Victoria Stewards said Payne was conscious and had movement of her arms and legs, but complained of abdominal pain after the fall.

Payne's ride was trained by her brother Paddy, and she had already ridden two winners earlier in the day.

Payne won the Melbourne Cup last year on the Darren Weir-trained Prince of Penzance.

In an unrelated incident, six jockeys were taken to hospital while racing at Taree, on the NSW Mid-North Coast, today.

Leading apprentice Samantha Clenton suffered suspected fractures to her leg and collarbone after horse Bazza's Boy broke its leg in the Benchmark 62 race.

Another rider suffered suspected internal injuries. 

All of the riders involved in the race are apprentices. 

Sadly, one of the horses had to be euthanised.
