Michael O’Brien now leading candidate for Victorian Liberal Leadership

Victoria’s shadow attorney-general John Pesutto has lost his blue-ribbon seat of Hawthorn 10 days after voting closed in the state election.

The declaration leaves shadow treasurer Michael O’Brien, who held onto his neighbouring seat of Malvern despite suffering a mammoth swing, as the favourite to take over from Matthew Guy as state Liberal leader.

The Victorian Electoral Commission officially awarded the seat to Labor’s John Ormond-Kennedy yesterday – only the second time the seat has not been held by conservative parties.

Mr Ormond-Kennedy took to Twitter yesterday to claim the seat.

"It's extremely humbling to be the new member for Hawthorn. I want to thank all my supporters who did so much to help achieve this historic result," he said.

Yesterday’s preference distributions delivered more bad news for the Liberals, with incumbent MP Louise Staley losing the rural seat of Ripon by just 31 votes to Labor's Sarah De Santis.

Liberal frontbencher Heidi Victoria also bowed out of Bayswater where Labor's Jackson Taylor claimed victory.

The opposition, however, survived a challenge in Caufield, with senior Liberal MP David Southwick holding onto the seat.

"The rollercoaster is over and I have been given the privilege of representing Caulfield for another four years," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Greens are celebrating in the Prahran electorate after fending off the major parties to retain the seat.

The Victorian Electoral Commission will formally declare the Mordialloc district today.
