Friends and family gather to farewell sailor killed in Sydney to Hobart

Friends and family have gathered in Adelaide for a touching memorial service to farewell Nick Smith, who was killed during the recent Sydney to Hobart yacht race. 

Wreaths were laid in the waters of Outer Harbor as a tribute to send off the experienced sailor.

"He never lived a dull moment in his life," said friend Neil Parker, who raced dragon boats with Smith.

"He was always adventurous, he always did things that most people wouldn't."

Smith was in his fifth Sydney to Hobart when the boom struck him while aboard the Bowline, killing the 65-year-old.

The yacht's skipper was among those paying tribute today at the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron. 

An investigation into how Smith died is ongoing, and a coroner's inquiry is still to come.
