Melbourne woman stabbed by intruder

A woman has been stabbed by a man who broke into her Melbourne home in the middle of the night.

The intruder got into her Meadow Heights home about 2am (AEDT) on Monday.

Police say there was an altercation between the man and the 40-year-old woman, who suffered stab wounds.

She was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she was in a stable condition.

Police are describing it as an aggravated burglary and say the offender remains on the run.

He is described as a young man with short, fair hair and was wearing jeans and a black t-shirt.
