Melbourne rocked by 20mm of rain in 10 minutes

Melbourne was rocked by storms, with severe weather warnings issued for the area and more than 20mm of rain falling in 10 minutes.

The Bureau of Meteorology said Melbourne Airport copped 20mm of rain in less than 10 minutes as the storms rolled through. 

Seymour, Kyneton, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and Bacchus Marsh were included in the warning areas.

Loud thunder and lighnting rocked the city just before 5pm and it brought a serious downpour.

Meanwhile, at Melbourne Airport floodwaters crept through the roof of the international terminal. 

Several trees have reportedly been knocked down in the storm, with the SES receiving numerous calls for help.

The storms have led to flash flooding in some areas, including the York Street Underpass, where water blocked off the roadway. 

The heavy showers, thunder and lightening are being triggered by very slow moving storm cells.

In the city gauge, 24.2mm has fallen in just a couple of hours while at the airport, totals have been even more significant with 23.6mm falling.

It’s quite the contrast to a few hours ago when Melbourne was basking in warm weather with sunny skies.
