Melbourne trees undergo trial injections to assist allergy sufferers

Melbourne City Council is injecting trees with hormones in an effort to make them less irritating for allergy sufferers.

The seed pods of London plane trees, which makes up 75 percent of Melbourne's trees, are often blamed for causing eye, throat and nasal irritation.

The council hopes that by reducing the number of seed pods, Melburnians will have a more pleasant outdoor experience.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said council made the decision to trial the injections following several complaints from Lygon Street traders.

Trunk injections have so far taken place in Southbank, and despite being unsuccessful, are due to be trialled on the popular Carlton dining strip next.

Manager of Urban Landscapes Ian Shears said they wanted to find a way of removing the "anti-social attribute" without cutting the trees down.

"People just want milk froth on their cappucino rather than debris," he told News Corp.
