Smashed tram lines set to cause traffic chaos

A truck has ploughed through tram lines outside of Crown Casino in Melbourne, with the incident set to cause traffic chaos across the city today.

Yarra Transit officers were called to Queensbridge Street at 3.45am after reports the oversized truck had collided with the tram lines.

9NEWS has been told the truck started taking down tram lines from the Flinders Street end of the road before coming to a stop near the casino.

The truck driver is not injured but is shocked at what happened.

It is believed the driver did not mean to end up in the city and was in the process of doing a U-turn when he collided with the tram lines.

One lane has been reopened on Queensbridge Street, with authorities expecting it to take several hours to clear the road and get trams running through again.
