The Australian who died after falling off a cliff on a popular Japanese pilgrimage trail is a retired woman.

Carol Ann Rice was walking the track at Kumano Kodo in the Wakayama Prefecture on Friday, when she fell about 40 metres.

The 66-year-old former pharmacist was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died a short time later.

Mrs Rice and her husband live in Kew, Melbourne and she was on “the trip of a lifetime” after retiring earlier this year according to a friend.

The UNESCO-listed Kumano Kodo is made up of several pilgrimage trails and the trip was one Ms Rice had been planning for a long time.
