Motivation for home intruder 'Geelong Night Stalker' unclear, police say

Police say they're unsure of the motivation of a man dubbed the "Geelong Night Stalker", who is believed to be behind break-ins and trespassing incidents across multiple homes in Melbourne.

The man's activities are believed to span the suburbs of Bell Post Hill, Highton, Rippleside, Torquay and Werribee.

He has successfully broken into two properties, but left empty handed both times.

Police have now launched a special operation in an attempt to catch him.

"We don't understand his motivation," Detective Acting Senior Sergant Gavin Mullins said.

"He is not stealing or damaging any property inside, or contacting anyone inside."

Mullins said the man could face charges of attempted aggravated burglary and trespassing.

He recommended residents lock their doors and windows securely, because the "Stalker" was not breaking in, apparently just trying doors to see if they are unlocked.

"While there has been no damage to property or items stolen, the alleged offender has been depicted on CCTV loitering around and attempting to enter properties," police said earlier.

"The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, approximately 180cm tall, medium build and aged between 30 and 40 years old."

The series of incidents occurred between 29 January and 7 March.

Anyone who has information, dash-cam vision or CCTV is urged to contact police.
