During the scuffle, one of the men slashed him across the head. Another man was reportedly armed with a pistol during the attack.

Hearing the fight, housemates Shane and Kylie woke to find Andrew wrestling with the gunman on the floor.

Shane was threatened with the knife, telling 9NEWS Andrew "got chopped in the head".

Kylie called police from the bedroom and said it was the woman who lured Andrew into opening the door.

"They got a female to pretend like she needed help," Kylie said.

"We think she knew. Something like that. And that's how he opened the door to her and they entered behind her."

After the attack the three offenders ran from the house and fled in a car parked in the same street.

The three friends were unable to get a clear description of the car and said they have no idea why their house was targeted.

Police are reviewing CCTV from the house but said the female accomplice is known to one of the victims.

"No information specifically to suggest that this was other than a targeted attack," Detective Sergeant Stuart Freeman said.

"There's certainly nothing to suggest that it was random."

The assault lasted a few minutes and the only item stolen was a mobile phone.
