During his arrest Briggs became unresponsive, prompting police to perform CPR and call for further medical assistance.

Briggs was rushed to hospital but he was taken off life support and died last night.

Homicide detectives are investigating the death in custody, overseen by Professional Standards Command.

"A male sergeant and a male constable, both from North West Metro Region, have been suspended while the investigation is carried out," police said.

No charges have been laid.
