Son shot and father hit with hammer in Melbourne brawl

A 23-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after he was allegedly shot in the stomach in Melbourne’s west Friday night.

His 53-year-old father was also allegedly struck with a hammer during the altercation in Dalray Crescent, Kurunjang, about 11pm.

Violence broke out after two other men arrived in the street while the father and son were trying to jump-start a car, police believe.  

Nearby residents reported hearing screams.

“I could just hear him wailing and screaming to help him,” Elizabeth Cassar said.

Rachel Fino said she saw movement on the street.

“A guy ran down the road with a stick and he was yelling ‘help, help, call Triple Zero, the guys got a gun’ and, yeah, pretty terrifying,” Rachel said.

A 27-year-old man was also taken to Footscray Hospital with assault-related injuries, and is assisting police with their inquiries. Another man is also assisting police.

“It would appear that they are probably known to each other, but we are still investigating,” Detective Senior Constable Adam McKubre said.

A nearby paddock, rubbish bins and drains have been searched as part of the investigation.

Police also wish to speak to any witnesses.
