Melbourne 'ISIL nurse' to face court today charged with terrorism offences

A Melbourne nurse charged with terrorism-related offences over his alleged involvement with the Islamic State in Syria will face court today.

Adam Brookman was extradited to Victoria on Saturday after returning to Australia on Friday night.

The 39-year-old was charged with one count of knowingly providing support to a terrorist organisation and performing services with intention of supporting a person to engage in a hostile activity in a foreign state.

The father-of-five previously claimed he travelled to Syria last year to undertake humanitarian work and said he was forced to work for ISIL after he was injured in an airstrike and taken to a hospital that was under the control of the terrorist group.

He is accused of then working as a guard and undertaking reconnaissance work for the organisation.

He will face a Victorian court today.

If convicted, he could face up to 25 years behind bars.
