Man caught with cocaine at Melbourne Airport

A man arriving in Melbourne on a flight from Dubai has been charged after police allegedly found five kilograms of cocaine hidden in his suitcase.

Sam Kul of Roxburgh Park arrived at Tullamarine airport today, where Border Force officers conducted a search of his luggage.

During the examination they discovered the suitcase had a false bottom, which when removed revealed three packages wrapped in brown packing tape.

The Australian Federal Police allege the packages contained a white powder which returned a positive result for cocaine.

Kul, 33, was charged with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of cocaine and briefly fronted Melbourne Magistrates Court this afternoon.

He made no bid for bail and was remanded in custody.

Further forensic testing will be conducted to determine the exact weight and purity of the substance, the AFP said.

Kul faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

He is due to appear in court for a filing hearing on Wednesday.
