Dozens of homes have been evacuated over fears a dam could burst South of Geelong in Victoria.

Emergency Services are on scene at a private dam located near South Beach Road and Pintail Drive, Torquay, after a leak was detected.

Leaks have been reported coming from the dam and relevant agencies are on scene assessing the situation and potential consequences.

Volunteers have been using a large pump to reduce the water level.

Victoria Police are door knocking affected residents to provide further information.

"There is an immediate threat to a limited number of community members in the vicinity," a warning from Victoria's SES said.

Almost 150 residents have been relocated to hotels or are staying with friends and family.
