'Bloody do it': Great-grandparents face down gunman

Great-grandparents Brian and Otwina were leaving a Melbourne social club after an evening out when a masked man stuck a shotgun in their faces.

The gunman demanded they open the door of the club in Sunshine in Melbourne's west to let him in, during the Tuesday hold-up.

"Count to 10 he says, then he just put the gun to my head and he started counting," Brian, 78, said.

"So I turned around and I said if you're going to do it, just bloody do it."

Brian then tried to snatch the weapon from the masked man - only for the bandit to pull the trigger.

Unbelievably, all that emerged was a click.

Brian said he heard a click on two occasions, while CCTV footage of the incident showed the man moving his forearm.

The gunman then turns his attention to Otwina, 77.

"He said, 'if you don't shut your mouth, I'll kill you," she said.

"And he turned and he was going to hit me in the jaw."

Brian moved to protect his wife, provoking a vicious attack from the gunman who bashed him with the shotgun and fractured his skull.

Incredibly, the couple was saved by their car alarm going off, which frightened the gunman into fleeing.

Police suspect a second person may have helped him escape.

A silver 2009 VE Holden Commodore with New South Wales registration plates CG 48 YL is being sought in connection with the investigation.
