Uber driver stuck in Melbourne floodwaters escapes onto bridge

An Uber trip has ended badly for a Melbourne driver, after his vehicle was swept into floodwaters.

The vehicle became trapped under a bridge at the city's Elwood Canal, with floodwaters inundating the car.

The driver was forced to climb out the car's window, onto the back of the vehicle and onto the bridge.

Local passers-by assisted the man, while others filmed the incident.

The escape comes after torrential storms pummeled the city with heavy rain that caused flash flooding throughout Melbourne this afternoon.

Several suburban streets turned into rivers, with 38mm of rain recorded at Geelong in just 20 minutes.

The SES has received over 1600 calls for help in the past 48 hours.

The BoM has confirmed severe thunderstorm warnings for the greater Melbourne area have been cancelled, however flooding remains a risk to residents.

Authorities reminded Melbourne residents to never drive through floodwaters.
