Melbourne family lucky to escape terrifying fire-bombing attack

Two men have been caught on CCTV fire-bombing cars in a Broadmeadows driveway, just metres from a young family sleeping inside.

Surveillance video shows one of the alleged offenders throwing fuel over a red car before setting it alight.

Flames explode from the second vehicle as the man runs away.

Robert Duncan and his young son Jacobe were sleeping just metres from the blaze.

"I had to sort of pretty much put my back to the flames so I could carry (Jacobe) outside," he said.

"My gut was saying my car was going to blow up."

Mr Duncan told 9NEWS he has no idea why he was the target of the attack which destroyed a car he had just spent several thousand dollars fixing up as a surprise for his daughter Sharni, whose birthday is tomorrow.

Police are looking for two men of average height and build.

The men could face a number of charges including arson.
