Afghan man dies at Melbourne detention centre

A 23-year-old Afghan man has died at a Melbourne detention centre after he was found on the floor by his roommate.

It is understood emergency services were called to the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation Centre in Broadmeadows about 11.30pm yesterday but the man could not be revived.

Victoria Police confirmed the man's death today and said it was not being treated as suspicious.

The man’s roommate told The Age he was woken when he heard the deceased’s body land on the floor.

"I heard some bang, something dropped, like heavy," he said.

"When I wake up, I saw him on the floor. I tried to wake him. He was breathing, breathing hard.

"I tried to shake him but he didn't give me any response so I go to the officer. The officer came after maybe 10, 15 seconds. The lady tried to give him CPR. He was, like, choking."

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
