'Loving couple' stabbed to death in home

A major manhunt is underway in Melbourne after a husband and wife were found stabbed to death in their home.

The bodies of Robert and Cheryl Adamson were found yesterday afternoon at the Murrumbeena property they had lived in for 40 years.

Neighbours of the pair have described them as a "lovely couple".

Resident, Colleen Hemming, said the couple were always willing to lend a helping hand around the neighbourhood.

“It’s just devastating,” Ms Hemming said. “No one deserves to die like this.”

Colleagues of Mrs Adamson, 60, who worked in a library, found the pair after visiting their home when they failed to show up for work.

Police have not yet ruled out a burglary gone wrong, but there are no obvious signs of forced entry or that the couple had assaulted each other.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McIntyre says both were viciously attacked with a knife or blunt weapon.

It is believed the couple's son may have been living at the house but he was not at home when the attack occurred.

“He’s assisting us with our inquiries,” Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said. “At this point he is not a suspect.”

There are no obvious signs of a break-in either and no evidence the deaths were a murder-suicide, police said.

Det Sen-Sgt McIntyre said police were yet to determine the circumstances of the “brutal” double murder.

“We don’t know what happened,’’ he said. “They’ve both been assaulted."

Police have no suspects in mind but say it was unlikely to be a murder-suicide.

“It’s going to be a long, drawn-out process,’’ he said.
