A Melbourne childcare provider has been charged after two toddlers escaped from one of its centres and onto a busy road.

Video of the incident, which occurred on March 12, showed two young children running across the multi-lane Ballan Road after they escaped the Werribee West Family Centre.

Ballan Road has a speed limit of 70 km/h, with motorists slamming on their brakes and chasing after the children to whisk them out of harm's way.

Werribee West Family Centre is operated by Early Childhood Management Services (ECMS).

A spokeswoman from the Department of Education and Training confirmed today it had brought charges against ECMS, who now potentially face heavy fines.

"The safety of children being cared for by early childhood providers is of utmost importance," she said.

"The Department recently issued charges against Early Childhood Management Services following an incident at Werribee West Family Centre in March this year."

"As the matter is before the courts we are unable to comment further."
