Alleged driver accused of high-speed car chase fronts court from hospital bed

A man accused of a high-speed rampage across Melbourne has appeared in court from his hospital bed on 64 charges.

Aleksandar Misovic, 36, was charged yesterday after he took police on an erratic pursuit after allegedly stealing a van about 5.40am last Friday.

Police allege the van was being driven erratically and at speed when it was involved in collisions with several parked cars and moving vehicles throughout the morning.

The hours-long chase came to a crashing end in Point Cook just after 1pm, when the van ran over a street sign which became caught under the vehicle.

Helicopter footage showed the man jumping from the window of the van and attempting to flee on foot, before he collided with an oncoming unmarked police car.

There were no serious injuries.

Police say Misovic was drug-affected at the time of the pursuit and after the crash told officers he uses 'all' types of drugs including methamphetamine.

He has been charged with a raft of offences including multiple counts of breaching bail, charges relating to driving at 150 km/hr, including one count on three wheels, driving through red lights, car theft and not holding a valid licence.

He was also hit with 12 counts of reckless conduct endangering life and 17 counts of reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

Today he appeared at Melbourne Magistrates' Court via video link from his hospital bed, where he is recovering from injuries including a broken leg and hip.

The court heard Misovic was working until late last year.

He holds a degree in construction management and engineering.

Misovic's lawyer described his client's downward spiral after he was involved in a motorcycle accident in 2015.

The Point Cook man was prescribed opioids during his eight-month recovery, which his lawyer said led to substance abuse, including the use of heroin.

He then had a knee reconstruction in 2021, where he relapsed and his addiction began.

Misovic was out on four counts of bail at the time of Friday's pursuit.

He again applied for bail today, which was denied by the magistrate, who argued it could have catastrophic consequences on the community.

Misovic's next court date is set for August 4.
