'Pretty much all services disrupted': Melbourne public transport reeling after wild weather

Melbourne's train network shuddered almost to a halt during a storm described by officials as unprecedented.

Public Transport Victoria chief executive officer Mark Wild said the overnight storm was very extensive and resulted in a difficult commute this morning.

"This has all been caused by lightning storms and some flooding on our lines, quite unprecedented actually to get such a combination of lightning and flooding together," Mr Wild said.

Metro Trains chief executive Andrew Lezala said lightning strikes caused power surges through the signalling network, blowing fuses. Some lines were also affected by floods.

"Pretty much all services were disrupted," he said.

Delays remain on some lines as crews work to restore services before the afternoon peak.
