Melbourne metro trains to be built in Victoria

Victoria's largest single order of trains will be built in the state with more than 1000 jobs created in the process, the state government says.

Sixty-five high capacity metro trains - expected to running by 2026 - will be built by the Evolution Rail consortium with Melbourne's Downer Rail to lead the $2 billion contract, Premier Daniel Andrews announced this morning.

Fifteen percent of the workforce will be made up of Victorian apprentices, trainees and cadets; while 60 percent of the materials used will be locally sourced.
