The federal government is pushing ahead with a bid to find consensus amongst media players for changes to broadcast laws.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott put the issue on the backburner, but Communications Minister Mitch Fifield warns existing rules - limiting the reach of broadcasters - will become redundant as consumers choose what they want by working their way around existing regulations.

It was "entirely reasonable and appropriate" for the government to see if there was a better way to reach consensus, he told ABC radio on Wednesday.
