Man dies after being seriously burnt in Sydney unit fire

A man has died after suffering burns to 80 per cent of his body in a unit fire in Sydney's north.

Emergency services were called to the unit in Meadowbank about 3.30pm yesterday after neighbours reported hearing an explosion followed by the eruption of a fire.

Police found the 45-year-old man inside the hallway of the unit suffering serious and significant injuries.

He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

9News understands he had suffered burns to 80 per cent of his body.

Police revealed today the man died in hospital overnight.

"An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the fire; however, the cause is not yet known," police said.

About 50 residents were evacuated from the unit block as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
