MCG boots AFL Grand Final day BBQ tradition

One of Melbourne's great annual sporting traditions has been given the boot amid a ban on parking outside the MCG for the AFL Grand Final.

The time-honoured ‘G car boot barbecue has been given the chop on Saturday due to security and safety concerns, MCC venue and events services general manager Gerard Griffin confirmed this afternoon.

"There's no public parking in Yarra Park so as a consequence there's no option of bringing gas barbecues in," Mr Griffin said, adding fans could still use fixed cook-tops in the area.

“It’s a tough decision, but that’s what the world we live in.”

The security measure comes as numerous concrete bollards will be rolled out tonight along the route of the Grand Final Parade.

“We believe we’ve got everything in place, and we will be well and truly respond to any eventuality,” Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said.

The parade will start at 12pm on Spring Street, outside Treasury Building, and snake its way down Wellington Parade.

It will end outside the MCG, where the Adelaide Crows and Richmond Tigers will vie for the 2017 premiership.

Motorists have been advised that roads in the local area will be closed from 7am.
