McCormack flags more regional grants funds

The deputy prime minister wants to see more rounds of a grants program that went primarily to seats targeted by the coalition at the last federal election.

It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison sensationally claimed the $150 million program was never meant for regional areas.

Announced weeks before the election last year, it was to fund female change rooms and upgrade community swimming pools in rural and regional areas.

Mr Morrison swatted away questions about $10 million given to the North Sydney Olympic swimming pool on Sydney Harbour under the regional program.

"This is one of the bits of misinformation that are out there," Mr Morrison told 2GB radio.

"When I announced the program, I didn't say it was for regional areas, it was for areas right across the country."

Nationals leader Michael McCormack said the fund would be available for all communities across Australia.

He says the program - along with the controversial community sports grants fund - was oversubscribed.

"Not all the money has been spent, just like with the sports grants," Mr McCormack told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

"I'm hoping to see even future rounds of that."
