McCain Foods stands by its berries

McCain Foods has moved to distance its frozen berry products from those at the centre of a Hepatitis A food scare.

The company on Monday said it recently stopped sourcing frozen berries from Chile, where the suspect berries were grown.

Some McCain Foods berry products with "Products of Chile" may still remain on store shelves.

These were microbiologically tested before packaging, and received by British Retail Consortium certification.

McCain Foods Spokesman Tony Rasman said the company now obtained its frozen berries from a NSW-based company that imported them from the Europe and the US.

These berries were also microbiologically tested before packaging in Australia.

"McCain Foods stands by the quality and safety of its products," Mr Rasman said on Monday.

Frozen berries grown in Chile, packaged in China, and sold in Australia by Patties Foods have been linked to eight cases of hepatitis A infection. Three products have been recalled.
