'Grin reaper' who laughed after manslaughter conviction confronted by 9NEWS

The man dubbed the “grin reaper” has been confronted by 9NEWS after his infamous release yesterday, in which he laughed after being convicted of manslaughter.

Matthew Scown was convicted over the death of four-year-old Tyrell Cobb, who died in agonising pain after being bashed.

While there's no suggestion Scown inflicted the fatal injuries, he did admit to police he knew about the abuse little Tyrell was suffering.

When asked if he felt lucky to be released after spending less than three years in prison, Scown said he’d done the “right thing”.

“I've already spoken with my lawyers and I've spoken with the other family, so what youse (sic) need to do now is leave me alone,” he said.

However there’s been universal outrage over the case, with children’s safety advocates calling for him to be put behind bars.

“Child abuse ignored is child abuse. So if you know it's happening and you haven't done anything to stop it, you're as guilty as the perpetrator,” Hetty Johnson from Bravehearts said.

9NEWS can also reveal Scown's full criminal history, which includes multiple serious assault charges, including against women; wilful damage; multiple breaches of bail; and multiple failures to appear at court.

As for his laughter, Scown claims he was laughing at a cameraman running into a bin, but eyewitnesses, as well as camera footage, show he was smirking before that incident.

The Queensland attorney-general has now asked for a brief on the case so the government can consider an appeal.
