Mass Santa shortage threatens Christmas tradition

A looming widespread Santa shortage could threaten the beloved annual Christmas photo this festive season.

One talent agency said in the last three years fewer Australians applied for the top job due to COVID-19.

But with the return to normal, the agency is struggling to bring talent numbers back to pre-pandemic levels in the lead up to December.

Scene to Believe Managing Director, Stefan Hutton, is calling on Australians to don the big red suit, saying it was the perfect casual job to boost budgets ahead of Christmas.

"Posing for a photo with Santa is an annual tradition for families everywhere," he said.

"We have a plethora of fantastic roles available across the country for everyone from grandparents to retirees and everyone in between."

Hutton said becoming a Santa's Helper was a great way for seniors to be more involved in the local community and interact with young people.

Santa veteran, Tony Hooper, said the the role was perfect for older Australians who were interested in returning to the workforce.

"Being a Santa is by far the best work I've ever done," says Mr Hooper.

"It's flexible, I work when I want and I spend my days talking to young families and getting in the festive spirit.

"It's also a great way to earn extra cash right before Christmas, which is when I need it most. And the best part is, I can still receive my pension!"

The role is suitable for Australians of all shapes, sizes and ages and the only skills required is a love of Christmas and a positive, friendly personality.
