Service for both Optus and Vodafone customers has been restored after both telcos suffered a major outage.

In a statement Vodafone said the outage on its network had been caused by a failed transmission link while Optus said it was unclear what had caused the outage affecting its network.

It is unknown exactly how many people were affected by the glitch but there were reports of disruptions right across the country, according to Fairfax.

The issue also affected customers on telcos who use Optus' network, such as Amaysim and Virgin Mobile.

Both companies took to social media to reassure customers they are working on fixing the problem.

But for some customers that simply wasn't good enough, with many venting their anger on both the Vodafone and Optus Facebook page and Twitter accounts.
