Concerned federal Labor MPs have been reassured conditions for asylum seekers on Nauru have improved.

Four MPs used the Labor caucus meeting on Tuesday to raise questions relating to asylum seekers and children in immigration detention.

Opposition immigration spokesman Richard Marles, who has been to Nauru to inspect facilities, told the meeting the key issue now was "less about conditions and more about resettlement".

Labor would continue to press the government to speed up resettlement, look to other countries for new resettlement agreements and engage more with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

At the same time the opposition would seek independent oversight of the system and a children's advocate.
