The "Marry me Maree" scrawled across the sky today intrigued Melburnians, who took to social media wondering who the lucky lady was.

But she didn't think she was so lucky, according to a man named Michael, who claimed to be the man popping the question.

"Unfortunately she said no," Michael told Fairfax radio.

When asked the reasons for her rejection, the deflated man declined to comment.
