Manus detention centre 'pleasant': PNG PM

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has described the Manus Island detention centre as "very pleasant", saying hype in the Australian media is unhelpful.

There have been reports in the past about detainees attempting suicide and going on hunger strike at the centre, which was also the scene of last year's riot in which Iranian man Reza Barati was killed.

Two men arrested over his death have yet to face trial and Mr O'Neill said he would look into reports that the case was being stalled because the accused men had not been provided legal representation.

"We just cannot fast track it because judiciary in PNG is very independent," Mr O'Neill told Sky News on Thursday.
