Residents in Sydney’s west have found themselves caught up in what is being described as a bitter turf war, with a car set alight hours after a daylight shooting.

Amateur video shows the deliberately torched car burning on the side of Surrey Street in Guildford street last night.

Police believe the car was the same one used by two men in a shooting in South Granville yesterday.

A man believed to be in his 20s was hospitalised with multiple gunshot wounds after the attack happened about 1.30pm AEDT.

9NEWS has been told the bullets may have been intended for another man who recently returned from Syria and allegedly has links to Islamic State.

ANU security expert Clive Williams said the shooting was likely part of a dispute.

“I think the clashes between different groups in Sydney is probably more to do with criminal activity and criminal rivalry, than it is to do with terrorism,” he said.

Neighbours told 9NEWS they were stunned the car was torched on their quiet street.

“Everyone was running, we were trying to find out if anyone was in the car but I think they ran off,” Ken Fatu said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
