A man has been charged over the brazen indecent assault of two girls on a crowded Melbourne tram.

Police yesterday released CCTV footage and photographs of a man wanted for questioning in relation to the alleged assaults.

Detectives said the victims, both teenage girls, were travelling together on the tram along St Kilda Road, south of the CBD, shortly after 3pm on June 20.

The man targeted one girl, who moved away from him, before focusing on the second girl, who was not immediately aware she was being assaulted because it was a crowded tram, police said.

Before getting off the tram the 17-year-old high school students took photographs of the accused man, which police released yesterday with a public appeal for him to come forward.

Last night, a 28-year-old Maidstone man handed himself into police and was later charged with two counts of indecent assault, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

He has been bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on November 10.

Detective Sean Campbell, from the Transit Crime Investigation Unit, told reporters the girls performed "flawlessly" and took good photos of the alleged offender.

"In this day and age more often than not you’re going to be caught on some form of media and instantly transmitted all over the place," he said.
