Man faces Canberra court over shooting

A Canberra man has appeared in court charged with nine offences after a woman was shot in the head on Tuesday.

Michael Paul Forrest, 27, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, discharge of a firearm endangering life and attempted aggravated robbery using an offensive weapon.

He did not enter any pleas or apply for bail and a request for a suppression order was denied, the court heard.

Forrest will reappear in court on November 27.

He is accused of shooting a woman who was sitting in her parked car near a school in the inner-city Canberra suburb of Forrest.

The woman, who sustained gunshot and shrapnel wounds, drove to nearby Manuka Oval where she called for help.

A security officer provided first aid before she was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The alleged shooter fled in a vehicle and was arrested three hours later at Weston Creek.

Some local schools and government agencies went into lockdown following the shooting.

Forrest also faces charges of damaging property, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and driving while disqualified.
