A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a man was stabbed multiple times in what appears to be a random armed robbery in Sydney’s west.

Police said the 26-year-old man was getting out of a car on Queen Street in Ashfield about 12.40am when he was confronted by a teenager armed with a knife.

The man was then stabbed multiple times in the chest, leaving him seriously injured, police said. The teen allegedly fled empty-handed.

The 26-year-old was taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with a collapsed right lung. He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police arrested a 15-year-old in Park Street after a short foot pursuit, and hope to speak to him about the incident.

Officers also seized a knife at the scene, which will be forensically examined.

Two other men told 9NEWS they were also approached by an armed man, but managed to flee in a car.

"I just ran, he was trying to attack me, I just got into his car, my friend" one man said.
