Man stabbed at Melbourne train station

A man was stabbed multiple times in broad daylight before he collapsed on the steps of a Melbourne train station.

The man in his 20s was with friends at Sunshine Railway Station, west of Melbourne, when a fight broke out with another group of males on Thursday afternoon.

Sunshine police Acting Sergeant Michael Donaldson said the man was stabbed multiple times before he managed to get to the stairs of the train station where he collapsed.

The row then escalated, with more people becoming involved, and spilled into a nearby street with about 300 people in the vicinity at the time, Sgt Donaldson told AAP on Thursday.

The victim suffered wounds from an unknown weapon which police are searching for.

He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries but remains in a stable condition.

No arrests have been made.

The incident happened in the same suburb where a woman was stabbed to death a week ago.

A 33-year-old mother of four was attacked in Sunshine's busy Hampshire Road shopping district on Wednesday last week.

The woman's de facto partner has been charged with her murder.
