A 41-year-old man has been arrested after a man was shot in the face at a home in Wollongong, reportedly in a case of mistaken identity.

Police were called to a home on Graham Street in Unanderra shortly before 1am to find a 36-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his face.

However, police do not believe he was the intended target.

They suspect the target was a third man, who had reportedly engaged in an affair with the alleged gunman’s wife, 2GB reports.

Several other people were in the backyard of the home, when the man allegedly ambushed the gathering, firing at least three shots.

A bullet pierced the man’s cheek before coming out through his neck but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

He was treated at the scene and taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.

Police are expected to lay charges against the man who was arrested later today.

Police are urging anyone with information on the shooting to contact them.
