Scissor-wielding man shot by police at Central Station was ‘innocent young bloke’, brother says

The younger brother of a scissor-wielding man police shot dead at Sydney's Central Station last night has spoken out about the "innocent young bloke" he remembers.

Danukul Mokmool, 30, was fatally shot by police after he threatened a florist with a broken bottle.

He was allegedly carrying scissors when he charged at police, who fired four times.

Mr Mokmool's younger brother, Charlie Huynh, told 9NEWS he had actually seen a video of the shooting before he discovered it was his brother.

"I thought, 'oh, wow, the cops actually shot him'," he said.

"Little did I know it was my brother at the time.

"It's pretty devastating for the family."

Mr Huynh said his brother had been taking what he believed was medication for unspecified issues.

He said while Mokmool had previously had been in trouble with the law and spent time in jail, he had been trying to turn his life around.

Although Mokmool could be aggressive at home, Mr Huynh said it was more verbal than physical and not as "serious" as what he displayed on the night of his death.

"He hasn't been out causing trouble, he's been clean, looking for jobs," Mr Huynh said.

He was unsure why his brother had been at Central Station.

"If he has something on his mind he'll just disappear," he said.

One of Mokmool's former co-workers, Shannon Dowd, remembered him as a generous person.

"He was quiet. He'd give you the shirt off his back," he said.

Mr Dowd said he had last seen Mokmool a week ago, and he had seemed "distracted" then.

However, he said Mokmool had told him he was getting a job and trying to improve his life.

Business owner Emanuel Theoharris told 9NEWS the man burst into his shop and threatened him with a broken glass bottle about 6.45pm last night.

“He came from behind, he put his hand to my neck and put the bottle here,” Mr Theoharris said.

“He was yelling, ‘Don’t move! Call the police’,”.

He said the man then picked up a pair of scissors from the bench.

“After when I got out and he was here with some other people, he had the scissors everywhere. He put some scissors in his belt, and he was holding some,” Mr Theoharris said.

Authorities were called to the florist at the Eddy Avenue entrance to the city's main station by railway workers who reported an armed robbery.

When police arrived, the suspect allegedly charged at police before four shots rang out.

“If they didn’t shoot him, he would have attacked them with scissors he was holding,” the florist said.

A critical incident investigation will look into all aspects of the shooting, including the discharge of police firearms, Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton said.

Nearby kebab shop owner Salim, who did not provide his surname, rushed out after he heard people screaming.

He said he saw the florist, who has worked at the station for decades, covered with blood.

"I heard a noise - three shots - but I only realised what it was after I heard someone screaming," he said.

Salim said he saw the man suspected of attacking the florist lying on the ground surrounded by police as he rushed to help his friend.

"I feel bad for (the florist)," he said.

"He's a great person."

Police expanded the crime scene to take in more of the concourse just before 9pm and forensic police are examining the scene.

The incident is not believed to be terrorism-related, police said.
