Man sentenced over secret toilet cameras

An Adelaide man who was struggling with his sexuality when he placed hidden cameras in the portable toilets at the Tour Down Under has been spared a jail term.

Gordon Inchul Christie, 19, of Prospect, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to 28 counts of engaging in indecent filming of a person other than a minor.

On Wednesday, magistrate Paul Bennett suspended a nine month, three-week prison term and placed Christie on an 18-month good behaviour bond.

Christie was charged after a member of the public found a hidden camera in the male portable toilets being used at the Tour Down Under cycling race in Adelaide's Victoria Square in January.

Police were called and found a second device in the female toilets.

They said later that "inappropriate images" were found on the memory card of the camera taken from the male toilet, but the card from the female toilet was faulty and nothing could be retrieved.

Christie's lawyer told his sentence hearing that the offending arose from his client's struggle with his sexuality.

The prosecutor said people had a right to feel protected when using public facilities.
