Driver with ‘appalling’ record dragged police officer several metres

A 20-year-old man will serve just an extra three months in jail for dragging a police officer several metres while driving.

Jared Rose was sentenced today after footage was captured on a neighbour’s mobile phone.

He was seen with a friend talking to the officer about the friend’s outstanding warrant on January 14, in St Marys, western Sydney.

The footage then shows Rose jumping behind the wheel of his car and driving off, dragging the police as he bumped up onto the footpath with the doors open.

The magistrate said there was "no reason not to believe" Rose had been the driver, with police given ample opportunity to identify him.

He described Rose's criminal record as "appalling" for a man his age.

However, given Rose had already spent nine months in jail by the time of the sentencing, he will spend just an extra three months behind bars, to be released on January 2018.

He will have a further one-year parole period.

Rose's mother outside the court said she had seen the footage of the incident and that her son's actions were "a bad thing".

"Hopefully he'll learn," she said.
